St Mary’s Exhibition

The following is the report forwarded to the Herts and Essex Observer by David Hill of  St Mary’s detailing the two day exhibition and winners;

Photographic Competition and Exhibition.

St. Mary’s Church, Elsenham, 23rd and 24th June.

The photographic exhibition in St. Mary’s Church, Elsenham was a follow-up to the successful photographic masterclass, arranged by the Church Fabric Fund to raise funds for this 12th Century early Norman Church. The masterclass was designed and presented by David Woods of the Bishop’s Stortford Camera Club, and following the masterclass, attendees (and anyone else interested) were invited to submit their photographs into a photographic competition and exhibition, with the theme of “St. Mary’s Church”.

Well over 100 photographs were received, together with other interesting exhibits such as ancient wedding certificates and certificates of school attendance. These were displayed in the Church over the weekend of 23/24th June and drew in a steady stream of locals keen to see the impressive level of photographic skill on display.

The competition was judged by Associate Minister Rev. John Richardson, himself a keen photographer, and David Woods. Barbara Haslam won the adult section with her photograph of “The ever-open door”, with Jean Woolvin second and Dub Gannon third. Another photograph by Jean Woollvin, and one by Liz Gillett were judged to be “Highly Commended” as the judges struggled to separate so many high-quality entries. The Junior section was won by 9-year old Matthew Stevens, with Oliver Gillett a close runner-up.

During the exhibition local historian Gordon Barker treated visitors to an historical tour of the Church.

To close the exhibition, David Woods presented the Church with a wonderful framed photograph of the Church interior, as a gift from the Camera Club.
